2 x 2 Solos is a series of solo exhibitions featuring new work commissioned from four accomplished emerging artists based in the Oakland/Bay Area. The program recognizes artistic excellence and supports the freedom to create challenging and noncommercial work.
Cybele Lyle explores the language of architecture through photography, video and installation. For 2 x 2 Solos Lyle generates Shifting Spaces (2012), a structural intervention in the gallery that investigates time, emotional presence and queer identity. Similar to an open book, three gypsum board walls - or portals - project into the gallery space. The text of this "book" is splayed and sliced, intersecting the surrounding area. Complementing the larger sculptural work is an actual artist book Shifting Spaces (2012). Not easily or rapidly read as queer, Lyles' work requires audience members to come close both physically and metaphorically. As a result our bodies are inserted in her ongoing investigation of space and subjectivity.
About the Artist: Cybele Lyle holds an MFA from Hunter College in New York City, where she received the Tony Smith Award upon graduating. She received a BFA in printmaking in 2001 from California College of the Arts. Cybele has been an artist in residence at the Bemis Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts and Ox-Bow. She currently has a studio at Real Time & Space in Oakland. 2 x 2 Solos at Pro Arts is Lyle's first solo exhibition.
About the Curator: Jackie Clay is a San Francisco-based writer and curator. A recent graduate from California College of the Arts with dual-interdisciplinary degrees in both Visual and Critical Studies and Curatorial Practice, her intellectual work centers on the body and concepts of blackness. In her MA thesis project, she considered contemporary artist Vanessa Beecroft's early work VB19 (1996). Recently she worked with Red, Bike and Green, a Bay Area-based urban cycling group on a two-part exhibition at Berkeley Public Library.

2 x 2 Solos:
2 x 2 Solos provides a platform for cutting-edge, risk-taking art and situates artists in a critical contemporary art context. Supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, 2 x 2 Solos engages multiple layers of the region's arts ecology by providing institutional and monetary support for artists, curators, and writers in the Oakland/Bay Area. Participation in the program is based on nomination by the top arts professionals in the Oakland / Greater Bay Area. From over 100 nominations, 4 artists are selected based on review by a curatorial panel and studio visits with independent curators.
