Quarterly at Latham Square Featuring the work of Michelle Mansour
1611 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland January 19 - May 11, 2010
Oakland based artist Michele Mansour’s work is driven by the tensions between the scientific and the spiritual. Her fluid, abstract paintings use translucent washes of color with layered acrylic and silicone to create strings of raised circular marks. These strands and clusters appear both beautifully cosmic and grotesquely biological. In creating these works, Mansour references documentary images from microscopic photography and biology texts, while also exploring the imaginative spaces beyond the threshold of vision. On one level, the subject matter may suggest the inevitable possibility of illness and disease, but the paintings also serve as meditations on the exquisite and delicate balance of the natural world
The exhibition is on view weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm in the Latham Square lobby located at 1611 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. Admission is free.
