Quarterly at Latham Square

Featuring the work of George Pfau

1611 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland
October 19, 2009 - January 12, 2010

Clowns, comedians, and cartoons provide both the layered structure and the content for George Pfau’s works. These figures’ humorous appearance and actions work as mask for ideas that are perhaps too genuine to be discussed in a non-joking manner. Using detailed layers of oil and acrylic, Pfau juxtaposes rendered images, diagrams, cartoons, and less recognizable forms to create a dense landscape of overlapping signs and figures. Here, the clown’s costume acts as an exaggerated stand-in for any other uniform, clothing, or mental barriers we wear in our daily lives.

The exhibition is on view weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm in the Latham Square lobby located at 1611 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. Admission is free.
