Pro Arts at Latham Square: Masako Miki

The works by Berekely-based artist Masako Miki are whimsical and strangley humorous. The paintings and collages depict brightly colored landscapes, populated by deer, pigeons and people. Miki's light touch and keen eye produce works that are unexpected and eye-catching. Despite the fanciful aesthetic of the worlds they inhabit, her animals and figures are rendered realistically in comparison to the abstracted and highly graphic landscapes. Herein lays the incongruity at the heart of Miki's works. As her deer attempt to come to terms with their unusual surroundings, they stand in for how we interact with the often alienating nature of our own environments and cultures.

The exhibition is on view weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm in the Latham Square lobby located at 1611 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. Admission is free.
